WATCH OUT FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN...
Fall is back to
school time. Actually late August and early September is when
most public schools start.

Do you know the South Carolina law
regarding stopped school buses? Click on
http://www.schp.org/sbs.asp
to get more info. Also, here is a
link to a quick
poster concerning
the stopped school
bus law...
Allow yourself
extra driving time when school buses are on the highway in the
mornings and afternoons.
Slow down when
approaching children who are on the side of the road. Watch for
kids who might dart out from parked cars.
Remember that a
child under 7 years of age is NOT responsible for his/her
actions. And children between the ages of 7 and 14 are usually
not held accountable for their actions. Thus, if your
vehicle strikes a child, you will be responsible in most cases.
Be courteous and
cautious. A child’s life is too important.

HEATING
SYSTEMS...
Central
Systems
Have a professional inspect and conduct routine maintenance on
your heating system in the fall. Do not wait until colder
weather arrives.
Such maintenance will eliminate fire hazards and will ensure
your system operates more efficiently, saving energy and money.
Clean or replace all air filters.
Woodstoves and Fireplaces
In the fall, have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a
professional Chimney Sweep (look under
Chimney Cleaning in the yellow pages of your phone book). Make
sure this professional inspects the flue lining of the chimney
and looks for any loose mortar or bricks. Cleaning the chimney
removes any buildup material that could be ignited when you
light your fire.
Remove all combustible material that accumulated around the
fireplace or woodstove.

Other
Heating Systems
Many fires are started in house by using electrical plug in
stoves, kerosene stoves, etc. Be very carefully when using these
items or eliminate the use of them entirely.
If you do use them, never leave them unattended. Do not leave
them on when you leave the house.
Never attempt to heat your home by turning on the kitchen oven
and opening the stove door.
