South Carolina's oldest insurance agency
Carl M. Allen III, MBA – Account Executive
I
grew up in Wilmington, NC, but came to Charleston in 1966 to live in
a dormitory and attend Porter-Gaud High School. After graduation in
1969, I enrolled at the College of Charleston with intentions of
being a Marine Biology major. I was interrupted by the draft and
spent three years in the Navy, serving during the Vietnam War,
stationed in Norfolk, VA. I re-enrolled at the College of
Charleston and ended up majoring in Biology with an emphasis in
Pre-Med, graduating in 1977. My goal of attending Veterinary
School was not realized and I entered The Citadel’s graduate school
to get my Masters of Business Administration, graduating in 1986.
I was employed by WCSC-TV from 1980 to 1988, selling on air advertising time. I started out at the bottom and, by the time I left, I was the highest billing local salesperson. The TV station was sold in 1987 and I left in October of 1988, to be the manager of the Charleston office of The Ad Place, a Dallas, Texas based advertising firm. The company decided to later close the Charleston office and I did not want to relocate to Dallas, so we parted ways. On September 2 of 1989, I went to work with the Joe Griffith Real Estate Company, specializing in commercial real estate. Hurricane Hugo struck Charleston 19 days later and I, like everyone else, struggled through the next year. In late 1990, I made the jump to the insurance industry and have been there ever since, specializing in Group Health Benefits sales to small businesses.
I joined C. T. Lowndes & Company in September of 2003 to create a Health and Life Insurance department. In November of 2009, I received my property and casualty insurance license and can now offer this line of insurance to my current clients as well as new clients.
