Church fires have been in the news recently and I came across some interesting and surprising facts recently while reading an insurance magazine.

SLED determined that lightning caused the fire that burned the Greeleyville Church on July 2. The church pastor had originally said the church burned due to lightning.

More than 50% of fires in churches between 2007 and 2011 were caused by cocking equipment and heating and electrical systems.

About 16% of church fires were intentionally set. A fraction of these were deemed hate crimes.

Church fires have declined significantly in recent years.

During the period from 2007 to 2011, 31 churches caught on fire each week!!

The date does not distinguish churches by predominant race.

Churches face special fire risks: The steeples do attract lightning, and churches pose an easy target for arson since they are unoccupied much of the time.
