“The unspeakable happened in our city.” Mayor Joe Riley.

The most important word in his statement is “our”.

The killing of 9 innocent people in the Emanuel AME Church is certainly the saddest moment for Charleston during my almost 68 years as a Charlestonian.

But this is our city and I have never been so proud of our city.

The citizens of Charleston have handled this tragedy extremely well.

As I mingled with the people outside the Church early Sunday morning, the media was interviewing several folks and I was interested to hear a common refrain
– “This is not about race. Rather it is about love.”

Thanks to those who have so wisely led our city for so many years.

Thanks to all citizens of our city who showed that this event was not about race but rather about love conquering hate.
