This is a brief explanation as to how to understand Motor Truck (Truckers) Cargo insurance.

Motor truck cargo Insurance protects the goods that you are hauling from damage and theft.

Your client (the owner of the cargo) will want to make sure their goods arrive safely at their destination or that you have insurance in place to reimburse the client if the goods do not make it.

What can happen to your cargo? It can be

·         Stolen or high jacked.

·         Damaged by water leaking into the trailer,

·         Damage as a result of an accident or overturn.

·         Damaged during loading or unloading.

·         Items broken or lost

·         Spoiled due to loss of refrigeration

It is important that you clearly tell your insurance agent what cargo you are carrying in order for the proper insurance coverage to be put in place. Cargo policies do vary.

Be sure to choose an adequate limit of coverage as the insurance company will only pay for the limit stated in the policy. Do not over insure or under insure the cargo.

Make sure you have debris removal coverage in case your cargo ends up strewn across the highway.
