June 1 is the official beginning of hurricane season and a good time to be reminded about hurricane type matters.

In 2007, The South Carolina Legislature passed the Omnibus Coastal Property Insurance Reform Act. One aspect of this law was the establishment of the SC Hurricane Damage Mitigation program, or SC Safe Home.

SC Safe Home provides “free” grant money up to $5,000 for improvements to homes which have an assessed value of $150,000 or less and which are owned by low income homeowners. Matching grants are available for homes appraised at $300,000 or less. Eligible improvements include things like replacing the roof, reinforcing wall to roof connections, installing window protection devices, and other such repairs that may cause the home to better withstand high winds.

A list of approved contractors is found on the web page.

The application process is quite simple. SC Safe Home reimburses the contractor.

Full details of this program are available at www.scsafehome.com. All websites can be a little confusing and, on this one, the links for the information about the program are listed in the blue box on the left sidebar. Pay close attention to the eligibility checklist link.

To date, almost 400 grants have been awarded, totaling approximately $1,985,000!
