The Insurance Agency of choice that builds customer relationships through honesty, integrity and outstanding service

All vehicles (both for personal and commercial use) registered in South Carolina are required to be insured while being operated on a public road.

What are the SC State minimum liability requirements for auto insurance?

$25,000/$50,000 for bodily injury liability and $25,000 for property damage liability, commonly written as $25/50/25. You are also required to have uninsured motorists coverage with the same limits.

Ask your agent what the premium would be for the next higher limit, such as $50/100/50. You may be able to double your limits for only a few more premium dollars. At C. T. Lowndes & Company, we urge everyone to carry higher than the required minimum. Those limits are simply too low to properly protect your assets. We also highly recommend that your uninsured motorist limits be the same as your liability limits.

Why must I purchase uninsured motorist coverage if everyone is required to have liability insurance?

Even though the law states that everyone must have liability insurance, some people take out insurance, pay a down payment on their policy, but do not make their monthly payments. Their insurance lapses and they can drive without insurance coverage for weeks or months before the system catches up with them. If such an uninsured individual causes damage or injury to you or your car, you may file the claim under your policy’s uninsured motorist coverage.
