Hurricane Matthew- Aftermath

You have assessed your hurricane damages and filed your insurance claim. What now? Some tips:

Be patient while waiting for an adjuster. Remember this storm affected hundreds of miles of coastline from Florida to South Carolina and adjusters are swamped with claims.

Adjusters do see the policyholders with the most damage first. If you have minor damage and have not seen an adjuster, be thankful your home or business was not seriously damaged!

While waiting, you can line up a contractor to do repairs but be sure to retain a local contractor rather an out-of-towner. Be wary of scams and be wary of anyone asking for money in advance of work being done.

You should require a certificate of insurance from your contractor showing the contractor has general liability and workers compensation insurance.

If you make repairs before the adjuster arrives, take plenty of photos of the damage and save all receipts.

If you make temporary repairs, save the receipts for the adjuster.
