Travels with Henry and Esther to the Mediterranean Part 6

Our journey led us to Nazareth, the city of Mary, virgin mother of Jesus. We visited the Church of the Annunciation, built over the spot where the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce she would be the Savior's mother. Jesus grew up in Nazareth and learned his skills there as a carpenter. Later on, he preached in Nazareth.

Nazareth is now an Arab city where many Arabs are Christians. It was Sunday and we stopped at the Church of St. Joseph just as the morning service ended. Standing outside when the doors opened, we observed that almost all of the packed congregation were Arabs. A learning experience as I am not sure I knew that many Arabs are Christians.

As we approached the Sea of Galilee, we stopped at an overlook high above the sea. A sign indicated we were at sea level with the Sea of Galilee 675 feet below us. This was the south end of the lake and the entire area was planted in citrus and bananas. We could see a long distance into the Jordan river valley in Jordan.

At the Jordan River, we arrived at the Yardenit Baptismal Site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Baptisms still occur here today.

The Jordan River is only about 30 feet wide as it has been dammed at the south end of the Sea of Galilee. It is actually more narrow where it enters the northern end of the Sea of Gallilee. Certainly was not what I had imagined the River to look like!!
