“You Can’t Get Insurance”

A recent article in the Charleston Post & Courier told a story about a single mother of five who lost her household goods to a fire. She was living in a rented home on Johns Island when the fire occurred. Luckily the kids were not home at the time, the dogs were rescued, and no one was hurt.

The story went on to say that the mother did not have renter’s insurance because she “was told she could not because she was in a flood zone”. Whoever told her that certainly was not a knowledgeable insurance agent! Being in a flood zone has no bearing on the ability to obtain renter’s insurance.

There are some lessons to be learned here.

·        If you are told by one insurance person you cannot get insurance, ask another agent. What one agent cannot do, probably a different agent can.

·        Speak to an independent agent. These agents deal with many insurance companies and can almost always obtain a policy for you.

·        Make sure the independent agency you call is a Trusted Choice agency. These agents subscribe to a pledge of performance stating, in part, the agent “will work with you to identify the insurance and financial services that are right for you, your family, or business, and use our access to multiple companies to deliver these products” and “treat you with respect and courtesy”.

·        The Trusted Choice independent agency you contact should be one that has a good reputation in the community, is actively involved in community affairs, and conducts business with a high level of integrity.

You more than likely can get the insurance you need!
