I was born in Charleston, SC in 1943 and grew up on Meeting Street and then Legare Street. I attended Charleston public elementary schools, then I attended The High School of Charleston where I played basketball and tennis and graduated in 1961. I attended the College of Charleston and played varsity tennis, graduating in 1965 with a BS degree in Biology. I am a past president of the C of C Alumni Association and a member of the College of Charleston Athletic Hall of Fame. While at the College, I was a member of ATO fraternity and the Circle K Club.
After college and after a semester at Chapel Hill Graduate school and a semester teaching at Moultrie High School, I volunteered for the US Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. I served 3 years active duty in the Navy, first for 2 years onboard the USS Nahant (AN-83) and then one year on the Minelant Staff in Charleston.
In 1966, I married Gloria Seithel, my College sweetheart, and we have been blessed with 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
After my stint in the Navy, in 1969, I became athletic director, tennis coach, and intramural director at the College of Charleston, following in my father’s footsteps. I remained as tennis coach until 1984. During that time, I was active in the Kiwanis Club of Charleston, the College of Charleston Alumni Association, serving as President in 1994, the St. Andrew’s Society of Charleston, the South Carolina Society, and the German Friendly Society. I am a past member of Middleton Hunting Club, having served as president twice. I also served as the secretary and treasurer of the St. Andrew’s Society for 16 years and as the President in 2017 and 2018. About 15 years ago I began volunteer coaching the varsity tennis teams at the College of Charleston, a position that I still thoroughly enjoy.
I joined C. T. Lowndes & Company in 1979 as a salesman, and became an owner in 1984. Both of my sons, Bill and Chris, and my son-in-law Elliott Phillips work with me in the Agency. Elliott has recently taken over my position as sales manager for the agency. I am still active in the agency and will be promoting the agency and assisting in any way I can. I am very proud of the agency’s sales force. They are all individuals dedicated to providing the best possible coverage for their clients and are excellent representatives of our agency.
